Medical

Practitioners

SPECIAL TO THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS

The urgent necessity for the establishment of a sana- torium in the Colony as a preliminary to any subsequent measures for checking the spread of tuberculosis is emi- phasised in the replies received from 86 out of 100 private medical practitioners in Hongkong who were circularised by the Hongkong Daily Press for their views on tubercu losis in the Colony, and the best means to tackling the menace which is taking a toll of nearly 5,000 lives a year in this far-flung outpost of the Empire.

OUR CIRCULAR LETTER ASKED THREE QUESTIONS. 1. WHAT, IN YOUR VIEW IS THE BEST WAY TO TACKLE THE T.B. MENACE IN THE COLONY?

2. HOW COULD THE METHODS YOU SUGGEST BEST BE ENFORCED?

3. DO YOU CONSIDER IT ESSENTIAL THAT A SANA- TORIUM BE ESTABLISHED IMMEDIATELY AS A PRE- LIMINARY TO ANY SUBSEQUENT MEASURES FOR CHECKING THE SPREAD OF THE DISEASE?

Of the 100 selected medical practitioners addressed by "us eight were "too busy to reply." one "begred to be ex- cused" two refused to answer" our questions, without giv- ing any reason, and one had gone away.
