SINO - AMERICAN CULTURAL INST. LUNCHEON
Products Of C.I.C.
Exhibited
For the first time on record pro- ducts of the Chinese Industrial Co- operatives were exhibited in Hong- kong yesterday when Mr. Theodore Herman, Executive Secretary, Hong- kong Promotion Committee of the CLC, addressed the Sino-American Cultural Institute at thely tifin meeting at the Hongkong Hotel.
There was a good gathering pre- seat and this "was commented on
by the Hon. Sr Shouson Chow who
er Sir Shousɔn said that he con-

presided. In introducing the speak-ROYAL HONGKONG GOLF CLUB sidered it a privilege and pleasure STARTING TIMES FOR FANLING
to preside at this, the eighth meet-
ing of the Institute. He had wilt-
ten to members to maintain re-kong Golf Club starting tho for gular attendance,
11
In wishing the gathering · 11 happy and prosperous Now Year he hoped that the hostilities in China and in Europe will be com cluded by 1940 and that there will be peace
on earth and goodwill towards mën.
Mr. Herman, addressing the gathering, said in part, it is just 15 months since Mr. M. K. Lu, director of the North West head- quarters set up the first co-opera- Live movement in a small hansi
town, Today, in that once sleepy Lawn there are some 100 co-opera- Dives all of which were started under Mr. La...
The first was for a group of wap and candle makers who timidly asked for $500. They received $2000, set up in business, and have long since paid back their arst loan.
Now, in the Northwest alone there are over 350 such soclettes. From Sept. 1938 to Sept. 1939 they turned out products valued at more than $5,100,000. This business was on an original loan fund of slight- ly more than $1,000,000.
$4 MILLION MONTHLY Counting all industrial Co- operatives, there are spread over China more than 1300 doing a monthly business of over $4,000.000. The organization is spread into 3
main headquarters located. tn different corners of Free China. Big orders from official sources in- dicate that the CIC, is on its way to establishing a place for itself in the nation's economy.
In Hunan one of the best band- age-making shops in the country is a co-operative that makes 1000 lbs. each of absorbent cotton and gauze bandage dally.
HAND-POWERED MACHINES
It must be remembered that most of this work is done on small- scale hand powered machinery spinning wheels, looms, forges, drills. Plants are widely scattered near the bases of raw materials.
The reason for the growth of the C.I.C. is that it is exactly meeting the conditions of China's economy. There is a large supply of labour, a large supply of raw materials. widely scattered; there are handi- craft Industries and a great de- mand for everyday goods. Trans- portation is expensive.
IMPROVED MODEL
A spinning wheel turned out In a co-operative machine shop in Chengtule an improved model that costs less than NC $6. to make. With it a worker can produce 42 oz. of yarn per day compared with the 2 oz. formerly made by the old handspinning process using the faking spindle.
