CHRISTMAS DAY AND CUSTOMS: HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF MASSES
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS begin in Catholic churches on All the first moment of Christmas Day, with Midnight Mass. over the world Midnight Mass is one of the church functions of the year that attracts the largest number of worshippers, and it seems to make no difference whether the weather is cold, as in northern lands, or midsummer as in the antipodes,
Every priest can say Maas three times on Christmas Day. From the prayers which are said in these Masses it is evident that they are intended to commemorate a threefold birth of Christ: the temporal birth, at Bethlehem; the spiritual birth, in the hearts of the faithful; and the eternal birth of the Son of God in the Blessed Trinity.
