Capt. Lossius began his career in sailing ships and rose to be master of his own ship, Transferring to steam vessels, he crossed the. At- lantic Ocean over a hundred times, having been Shipwrecked and washed overboard more than once. Coming to the Far East, he crossed the Pacific Ocean as Chief Officer. of the White Star Line, many times. Since his arrival in une "Colony over 40 years ago, he has piloted steamers to Canton over 2,000 times and to Wuchow oves 1,100 times, being the first to open up the West River in June 1897..
