Progress Of The Chinese Industrial Co-Operatives

MR. THEODORE HERMAN ADDRESSES Y.M.C.A. DISCUSSION GROUP

The Chinese Industrial Co-operatives are showing, great promise according to Mr. Theodore Hernia, who addressed the Discussion Group of the Kowloon. European Y. M; G. A. last night. The Co-operatives now directly affect some 100,000 pro- ple out of a refugee population throughout the Interior of some 80,000,000. The proportion of the population affected is very small, but shows that the Co-operatives have already made a noticeable dent in the problem.

Nevile Henderson, the British Ambassador to Ger- many, the recent decision of the British Government to set a Parliamentary Com- mittee to examine and report on the affairs of the British Empire attains an important significance. As far as can be gathered from opinion ex pressed in the press at home and elsewhere, the reaction to. the British Government's pro- posal has been somewhat mixed. The Committee will consist of a Select Committee of the House of Commons and will be appointed at each session. The terms of refer- ence invest this body with the 644 duties of a roving commission and it will be headed by a chairman appointed from amongst those prominent members who have made a special study of Colonial pro- blems.

Hello & Goodbye

(BY A. W. HYER)

A GREAT MANY PEOPLE, imbued with one Idea, departed from the Colony shores by steanter over the week-end. Women and children were leaving Hong- kong due to the unsettled political situation. The topic of conflicts in various sections of the world was their sole conversation.

* The spectacle of their leave - taking and verbally, expressed fears was most amazing to watch from the side lines. At least 1,500 travellers left Hongkong in the past three days, most of them in a big hurry, and carrying the fear and panie of war clouds and talk with them.
