is still there, attached to the area railings, but it is no longer in use, It has been supplanted by a more recent gas lamp-post: which Ameri- can tourists continually mistake for the original.

There is still living, in Edin- burgh, a retired postman who delivered letters at 17 Heriot .Row in Stevenson's time,

He is Mr. Robert F. Buchanan who remembers meeting R. L S. on the doorstep when he was at home during his father's last illness in 1887.

Mr Buchanan recalls the great man's velvet jacket and especially his fine, strong voice.

COUPLE HANG FIVE HOURS ON PARACHUTE

A society polo, player, and his wife were rescued at New York World's Fair recently after spend- ing five perilous hours dangling from a parachute 1000ft, in the air. Tens of thousands of thrill- seekers watched the couple, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cornelius Rathbone as, strapped to a small plank below the parachute, they were billowed by the breeze.

They were trapped at 11.30 at night and it was not until 4.30 the next day amid loud cheers from the crowd, that the frantic rescue efforts succeeded.
