Gas Official Bound Over

A-jury's rider in a case at Man- chester Asatzes caused a judge to change his mind and saved a man from prison.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23, 1939. -PAGE 13.

Plevin had been found guilty of conspiring to cause a gas examiner to make testa on specially prepar- ed gas, conspiring to contravene...; the provisions of the Gas Under- takings Acts, conspiring to supply gas of low calorific value and conspiring to obstruct a gas ex- aminer.

Не

Mr. Justice Croom-Johnson said that the case had given hi 3 great deal of anxiety hoped he was not letting his feel- Ings interfere with his duty, but he was disposed to think that he'l did not pay sufficient attention to the recommendation of the jury.

Duty To The Puplic Mr. E. Hemmerde, E.C., de- fending counsel, who referred to the Jury's "admirable" rider, übserved: "It seems to me that if

The Judge, to Pieviri:"On further reflection I am rather disposed to think that some of the practices THE BEN LINE STEAMERS, LTD. at Southport gasworks were not unknown elsewhere, and that this trial may have some effect in making people engaged in public occupations appreciate more fully than perhaps they do at present the duty they owe to the public at large, as well as to their inmediate employers.

SILENCER FOR PLANE MOTORS

A "SOFT - SPEAKER" MUFFLER

A "soft-speaker" airplane motor muffler, which would enable fight ing craft to raid enemy territory with greater safety, was described at the French Association for the Advancement of Science, resently

held in Belgium.

The new. lencer was described by M. Jean Bosquet, an engineer for the great Liege Cockerill motor works, as "just exactly the opposite

of a radio loud-speaker.” It's effect,” he said, is to tone down ear- splitting acoustic power by reduc- ing the frequency of sounds blast- ed out by the motor cylinders.

The silencer as described would still leave the noise of the propel- ler, which engineers so far have been unable to eliminate,

INVERTED LOUD-SPEAKER M. Bosquet said the silencer is expected to have a marked effect on the construction of commercial passenger aircraft by eliminating much of the sound-proof cabine for passengers comfort.

The soft-speaker," is even built, like an inverted loud-speaker, with the big end of the "speaker" cone attached to the motor exhaust,

M Bosquet described the inven- tion to the 63rd Annual Congress. of the French Association, meet- Ing in Belgium in connection with the Belgian National Exposition.
