NAMED AFTER MISSIONARIES

ST. BERNARD, WHOSE FEAST OCCURS TO-MORROW, WAS ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE FIGURES IN THE CHURCH DURING THE MIDDLE AGES. HE LIVED IN THE' TWELFTH CENTURY. HE BELONGED À NOBLE FAMILY OF BURGUNDY AND WAS ONE OF A GROUP OF THIRTY NOBLEMEN WHO · ENTERED MONASTIC LIFE TOGETHER.

Included in the group were his father (after his mother's death) an uncle and four brothers. Bernard was twenty-two years of age at the time and had during his education shown great aptitude in literature, especially in poetry.
