BERLIN, Aug. 4 (Reuter)-Official circles profess to be com- "pletely in the dark as to whether or not Japan is on" the point of joining the German-Italian military alliance and they do not even say whether Germany would welcome such a step.

The German news agency, how- ever, issued a Rome message con- taining strong hints that Japan will join the alliance.

Neutral political circles express some doubt as to whether im- mediate consequences of Japan joining the alliance would be wel- come in Germany at present.

Reaction in Moscow and Wash- ington might be uncomfortable and powerful, it is suggested.
