BISHOP BLESSES COTTAGES

Slum Clearance Scheme

The Bishop of Colombo, the Right Rev. C. D. Horsley, blessed recently the cottages erected under the Binhalese Congregation | Stum Clearance Scheme of B Michael's and All Angels' Church, Polwatte!

The cottages are bullt on land which was given to the church 108 years ago..

The slum clearance project was irst initiated by the late Bir Henry de Mel, and the Wardens and Committee of the Binhalese congregation of the Church collect- ed funds for this purpose.

The foundation stone of the buildings was laid in April.

The aim of this slim clearance scheme is to build semi-detached cottages at the spot, and to provide a settlement for a colony of Sinhalese Christians.

'Scouting is peculiarly suited to the boys of Ceylon, who have the call of the wild in their blood, and have, as it were, the jungle on ther doorstep and the beauties of nature on every side” said Mr. LA. A. Hayter Assistant Chief Commissioner of Scouta, during the course of a talk on "25 Years of Scouting in Colombo," broadcast from the Colombo Station.

Scouting was first introduced, to the boys of Colombo by Mr. F. G. Stevens, who might well be called the Father of scouting in Ceylon. "From the single troop raised by Mr. Stevens in 1914, there were now no less than 52 Scout groups within the Colombo Local Associa- tion, totalling 2,200 Scouts.

In

the whole of the Island there were 376 groups' with grand total of 11206 Scouts.

Early Ploneers

Continuing, Mr. Hayter said that: If they had the vision of the early pioneers of scouting in Ceylon, they should not rest content until the boys of every village community throughout the length and breadth of the Taland were brought within reach of member- ship of the Scout brotherhood..
