JAPAN IS SHORT

OF IRON. Boston-Shortage of steel and other metals in Japan is tending to hamper that country's extensive shipbuild- ing programme, according to Harold P. Smith, New England manager of the Culted States Bureau of Foreign and Dom- estle Commerce. Considerable scrap metal that is taken from Boston to Japan is sald, to be used in steel that goes Inte ships.

Estimated needs of iron ore "In Japan this year amounts to 7,500,000 tons, 'compared with production of 2,600,000 tons, Mr. Smith declared. Of the 5,000,000 tons of imported ore needed, not more than 1,800,-

·000 tons can be obtained from Malaya, he said. French Indo- China and the Philippines may supply more than formely but, the mines to "Central China, which normally supply 1,300,- 00 tons, will probably supply much less than that amount, while shipments from North China this year are not ex- pected to exceed 1,400,000 tons.
