Described by the Chairman "as one of the best talks given at a Rotary luncheon, the address by Mr. C. Bernard Brown to a "Ladies' Day gathering of the Hongkong Rotary Club in the Roof Garden of the Hongkong Hotel yesterday was received with ap- plause of a volume seldom equalled at such meetings. Entitled Welcome to the Glorious East," Mr. Brown's talk was a continuation of a previous speech to the Club. In the latter he had dealt with his ex- periences as a clerk in the City of London 27 years ago; yesterday he told of some of his "adventures" following his arrival in the Colony in 1912 to take up a post with a firm of chartered accountants. Punctuated with amusing days, and here I'm afraid I'm going anecdotes and witticisms, and to bore the ladies. So I will digress

FALSE COLOURS must say that I arrived in Hongkong under false colours, though I was an innocent party thereto. Before leaving England I endeavoured to ascertain what were the essentials to social success In Hongkong and was told that it was important to know how to play billards, bridge, and to be able to a certain amount of kick out of and in this connection a couple of o'clock this morning. dance. But I omitted the most impor tant. How was I to know that my new Talpan, an old Interporter, and Chairman of the Cricket Club, -at. The subject presents so few attmetions that I will deal with it as briefly as possible. Upon my arrival here my poor attainments were tried out one by one. I was weighed in the balance and found wanting. my culminating offence being that I was engaged to be mar- ried. SOCIAL "LIFE.

Let us now turn a moment to the social life of the Colony. Hongkong has been charged with being stand-outsh and ex- clusive. Whether or not that is true to-day, it certainly appH- ed, in my opinion, to the long- kong of 25 years ago. Calling was "de rigeur! for bachelors, almost every dinner party was a white tie and tails áffair, and if a female was seen in the stalls at the City Hall the was ilable to be considered as being no better than she ought to be.
