London The situation in Tientsin has had a dampening effect on. commodities generally, though rubber has remained practically unaffected during the course of the week. This only goes to prove "the strong position into which this market is working, which pori- tion should be maintained provided matters are allowed to proceed smoothly under the direction of the International Rubber Regulation Committee. Growing fears are expressed in many quarters with regard to the proposed barter deal of cotton for rubber between the USA. and the authorities here. On the other hand, there are those who feel that, handled in a proper manner, any such transaction should work to the benefit of the rubber market.
Shipments from Malaya for the first half of June were cabled yesterday at 18,200 tons with a forecast for the whole of the month of 28,500 tona, whilst Ceylon exports for the first half of Jimné st 1,378 tons.compare with 1,162 tons for the corresponding period in

After a high rate of motor-car production for April of 337,372 units as against 219,310 units for the corresponding month of 1938, the May output and part of June are likely to be on a lower basis due to the labour strikes which have now apparently been settled.
