NEW LEVEL FOR CHINESE DOLLAR

Stabilization Åt Over Six Pence

LONDON, June 12

(Reuter)—

There are signs that the new level of the Chinese dollar will be, rather above six perice, says the "Finan- cial News."

If the exchange shows algns of holding at this point for any length of time, the. Chinese Ex- change Fund Will presumably adopt it as a new official peg and stabilize accordingly, but it will in no way regard any such stabiliza- tion as final,

The authorities were confident of holding the rate at 8 1/4d, when the Fund was formed in March. yet within three months, they were forced to revise their views. "The natural level" will be liable to change as long as the war with Japan drags on, says the journal.

In accordance with conditions prevailing in London and New York the market was steady throughout the session,

Fair enquiries for immediate and forward deliveries of Crude Rubber by dealers and speculators were apparently induced by reports that American manufacturers are constant buyers of "actuals", and that their inventories are estimated at low levels, ...

Furthermore the fact of having the American new automobile models 1940 ready at an earlier date than usual coupled with improving prospects for a general business-revival and for removing political, uncertainties as evidenced by à further substantial reduction of War-risk premiumą, will, it is believed, Lispire a sufficiently fair buying movement to gradually put the markst on higher levels.

Later in the session prices registered an advance of 1/8 cent for all deliveries due to persistent further general buying, the mar- ket closing with a steady undertone. 41

The average forecast of last week's stock of rubber in London and Liverpool shows a decrease of 50 tons.

Very little interest was shown to-day with most operators keep- ing on the side lines, pending Washington's decision on the export subsidy question. However, some concern, was » still felt '(regarding the over wet conditions in the central belt. Throughout the day, the market was lifeless with tÅding restricted and price move- ments confined to narrow limits. "A slight marking down was caused by lack of buyera.
