China To Eradicate Opium Evil By End Of 1940

CBUNGKING, Junė 5 (Central) — Despite the Sino-Jan- anese hostilities, the Chiness Government is determined to eradicate the opium evil before the end of 1940 in accordance with its original scheme, declared Generalissimo Chiang Kal- shek in a radio broadcast on the occasion of the centenary of the destruction of a huge shipment of opium by order of Viceroy Lin Tae-hsu at the Bocca Tigris in 1839.

The Generalissimo pointed out the necessity of strong und healthy citizens to serve as reserves for the Chinese Army 10 as to carry the war of resistance to a successful end, and in order to have such citizens the opium evil must be totally eliminat- ed
