A story of an exciting chase, among motor-boats and sman- pans, up a rope to the deck of, the Jardine vessel Ming Sang and down another on the other side of the ship, culminating In the latter rope snapping and the alleged fugitive plunging, into the sea, was told at the Kowloon Court yesterday when✈ Wong Chung appeared on a charge of larceny of a wallet while Chan Lai-chai was charged with 'siding and abetting.

False Pretences Alleged
ED. Sykes, 45, broker, residing at No. 171, Sai Yee Street, appeared on remand before Mr. R. Edwards, at the Central Court yesterday, charged with obtaining sums of $1,250 and $1,000 by false pre tences; from the Reliance Motora, on March 7 and 14, respectively. Mr. J. A. Duff appeared as com plainant on behalf of Reliance
The incident occurred about 10 a.m. on May 23 when the sa, Ming Sang was moored at buoy B2. The man who lost the wallet 'was' „Mr. Lai Yul-man, of No. 10, Peking Road, and the wallet was stated" to have been taken from him as he" was walking on the deck of a Hongkong launch that was along- side the Ming Sang.
Mr. Lau was making his way to a motor-boat-that was engaged for him when a man blocked his path. He was at a loss as to what to do and asked the man which way he wished to go, when he was attract- ed by the sound of a scume and saw a messenger of the Hongkong Hotel detaining a man.

Bykes was introduced to the Duff brothers early this year, and at the meeting Sykes informed them that he had several propositions in mind, but lacked the necessary financial backing.
Sykes mentioned about a number of transactions which had been put over by him, and to support his statements, he produced documents to prove it. Sykes had convinced Messrs. Duff, and mentioned that he was in a position to tender for contracts for hire of motor vehl- cles to the military authorities.
EXCITED MANNER
On February 28 Sykes went to the Duff brothers and told them in an excited manner that he had learned of a new contract with the military authorities, and that it had been made necessary owing to the, disturbed political situation.
He told them he was cheated by the United Delivery arm out of his commission so he insisted on be ing given a free hand. He further mentioned that he had gained the confidence of the military authori- ties through having secured the contract for United Delivery.
Following this, Sykes produced a statement showing the number of cars and lorries required by the

of hire, on March 2.

The two men were taken by Mr. w. V. Field, in charge of the Hotel taunch,' to the "Water" Folice Station, and were subsequently charged.

Wong Chung was committed by Mr. E. Himsworth to stand trial on a larceny charge at the Criminal Sessions, and sentence of six months' hard labour was passed on Chan Läi-chal. The two sea- men, Lo Chiu and Chang Kan, who caught the second defendant, were commended by the Magistrate for their public spirited act.
