The market opened 1/4 of a cent lower for all deliveries as com- pared with Wednesday's closing rates.

Overnight cable-reports on steady conditions prevalling in Lon- don and New York were ignored in Singapore where the market ruled early in the morning.

Despite fair enquiries for "actuals" speculators were hesitant to operate either way to any larger extent.

Subsequently, however, the market turned steadier due to trade buying which, coming on a narrow market, caused prices to advance by 1/8 cent for all options,

Closing tone was.quilet.

It is rumoured that an agreement for the exchange of one mil- llon bales of American Cotton for British produced Crude Rubber valued at fifteen million USA. Dollars will shortly be reached. In the event of such a barter-arrangement being completed it is assumed that the market will be adversely affected, although it is hoped that some effective measures will be taken to minimize any severe market reactions,
