1,500 OVERSEAS CHINESE MECHANICS SERVING THEIR COUNTRY AS VOLUNTEERS ·

More than 1,500 overseas Chinese mechanics from the. South Seas, armed only with jacks and mechanical tools, have served their mother country as volunteers since the war, according to a recent investigation.

These mechanies, most of whom are, by profession, car drivers and repair experts, have given up good positions abroad to render" their services to China. Many of them have been sent to the key spots In Free China where the activity of national reconstruc- tion has made them particularly useful. Hundreds of others are still undergoing intensive training in Yunnan Province, which is now the main link between the interior and the outside world. These men, however, represent only a small portion of the mil- lions of overseas Chinese who are helping their motherland in the war against Japan...

These men have come here un- der the auspices of the South Seas Overseas Chinese Relief Associa tion which maintains its head- quarter in Singapore. They were first given financial aid by Chinese Industrial magnates in Malayn, Jars, the Philippines Islands, and many other places en route to China, and they were most warmly welcomed by their compatriots in Kunming, capital" of Yunnan Pro- vince, upon their arrival.

To a party given in their honour early Int May. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek sent a message from Chungking' saying that their spontaneous offer of service, to their country in this hour of crisis not only brought material aid to Ching in the sacred war of inde- pendence but also demonstrated to the world that the Chinese people everywhere were united by a com- mon loyalty.
