TSUI BROTHERS KEEP COLONY
Ho Ka-lau And Lee Yue-wing Play
Well, But Outclassed
SINGLES CHAMPION'S
BRILLIANT DISPLAY
(By ""TAC)
TSUI WÀI-PUF and TSUI YUN-PUI (holders) retained the Open Doubles Championship of Hongkong by beating HO KA-LAU 'and LEE YUE-WING 6–3, 7-5, 6-8, 6~2.

PLAYING AS WELL AS. THEY DID AGAINST THE RUMJAHN COUSINS, by beating whom in straight sets last week they caused one of the biggest upsets of recent years in local tennis, Ho Ka-lau and Lee Yue-wing of the Chinese Recreation Club never- theless found the Tsul Brothers, clubmates and 1938 Colony Doubles Champions, far too fast and too bril- liant for them, and were beaten by four sets to one in the final played on the Stand Court at the Hong- kong Cricket Club ground yesterday,
Though the scores perhaps flattered them a little, there is no questioning the fact that the losers put up a fine and plucky show-certainly they did as well as, if not better than, any other pair would probably have. It was their bad luck that they were opposed to a pair who are on the crest of the wave-young, aggressive, possessed of all the strokes in the book, and one or two not in it, and with a natural under- standing, probably begotten of their relationship, that' turns two spectacular individualists into a deadly combination.
The man of the match was, as is only fitting, the Singles champion, TSUI WAI-PUI Some may think he tried too many "trick" shots. Cer- tainly some of his shots were calculated to "bring the gallery down."
But that is
the sort of play that packs the crowds in, and he fully deserved the applause that greeted sonie, of his. best strokes.
Those that come easiest to mind were a smash-drive taken about shoulder-high, behind which was the full weight of his body-swing --it was unreturnable-a well-
concealed drop shot from over- head with which he deceived the opposition a number of times, and a sort of reverse backhand drive.
He was not always success- ful with the latter, and there Was an "amusing incident in the eighth game of the second set, when, in attempting this. shot, he crashed the hall high out of the court, over the Des Voeux Boad end of the Stand, and into the road! A shot that caused much amusement amongst the big crowd pre- sent.

His Excellency the Governor. Bir Geoffry Northcote,, who had been interested spectator at the game, stayed for the ceremony.
In a short speech before calling upon Miss Dodwell, the Hon. Mr. T. E. Pearce said that though there had been an increase in the entries for the open events in the tournament just completed, the standard, he was told by experts, had not improved. He hoped, however, that it would next year. Entries for the Club events had decreased. He did not know the reason for this, but again he hoped next year would see a better res- ponse.
