The market has been very quiet during the week While there pas been but little improvement in the volume of business recorded the undertone generally has been much stendier. There has been no further evidence of the rather nervous selling experienced during the preceding week and prices, in most cases, show appreciable ad- vances as buyers were compelled ta raise their bids to obtain shares. Buyers were more, in evidence and a rather more optimistic feeling was prevalent at the close of busi- ness.. HK. Banks changed hands at $1355 to $1385. Unions were rather easier with sales at $453. Electrics Improved $1 with buyers at $54. Hotels were wanted at $51 and Lands at $334 with sales at $33. Trams improved to $161 after changing hands at $15.90. Provi- dents advanced 35 cents to $4.35 and China Lights (O) improved 50 Business has been cents to $81. reported in Wharves at $100 and in H.K, Docks at $164.

Benguet

After a quiet week gold mining stocks also show improvement at the close. San Mauricio, improved. to 94 ctvs. after deduction of 100% stock dividend, United Paracale closed at 61. ctvs. and Consolidated at Ps. 11.70 after easing to Pa.10.80 early in the week. This section of the market is very sensitive to outs'de influence, but at the close a steady market is reported from Manila.

The market opened with prices unchanged for all deliveries - as compared with Friday's closing quotations.

Very quiet conditions prevailed throughout the session. Dealers and speculators were disinclined to operate in view of the uncer- tainties, still surrounding the European political situation. Also May liqüidation as well as the possibility of an increase in quota for the third quarter of this year exercised a restraining influence upon activity.

It is, however, a reassuring fact that demand for "spot" Rubber is fair and that substantial buying for near deliveries by consumers American develops on easiness. Indication of a sustained good consumption is again provided by a fair Increase in Motorcar-pro- duction for last week.

In view of these facts higher markets may be confidently ex- pected pending clarification of prevailing uncertainties.

Late in the session prices for forward deliveries registered a slight advance of 1/8 cent on some buying for trads account, the market closing with a quiet but steady undertone.

There was a better tone in the market at. to-day's opening. Prices advanced on new buying and demand from the trade. How- ever, news generally was featureless, and price fluctuations were confined. to very narrow range. The market was inclined to ease off slightly towards the close, although, most of the prices reinained at the day's highest levels.

The market was steady. and there was good demand and also, covering by short interests. The other favourable factor, which helped the improvement in prices, was the steadiness of the Liver- pool and Winnipeg markets,
