Sliding Scale For Children
Mr. Shakespeare, Parliamen- tary Secretary to the Admiral-. ty (Norwich, L.Nat.) replying In the House of Commons re- cently to-Lieut-Com Fletcher (Nuneaton, Lab.) on the ques- tion of allowances in the Navy, said:-I am glad to have this opportunity of making clear to the public the system of chil- dren's allowances, enjoyed by married naval ratinga. This system is anderstood, and I bay lleve appreciated, by the per- sonnel of the Navy, but it is not so renerally understood by the general public. Children's allowances for ratings since 1920 have been on a silding scale varying for each year with the cost of living as ascertained on January 1 of each year. Every 10 points variation is given its appropriate scale.
The minimuma
rates are related to cost of living figures between 46 and 55. Rates of children's allowances fell from 1920 to 1931, when they remained on the minimum scale until 1937. SCALE INCREASES
