MARINE GOODS FROM JAPAN
Cross-examined. by Mr. D'Al- mada. Wong stated that from March to July 1937, his fem im- ported about 2,000 bales of marine goods each month from Japan, and after July the figure; fell to about 150 bales monthly owing to the lack of freight space.
The demand for the goods, in Hongkong remained the same, sald witness. He had held on to his stock in anticipation of a higher markety and denied that his stock had been reduced owing to a local boycott.
Mr. D'Almada: Do you mean to say that the patriotic feel- ing of Chinese in Hongkong is not strong?
Witness ariswered that he did not like to comment on the state of the patriotic feeling of his countrymen iry the Colony.
Mr. D'Almada: At any rate, you had no scruples'about im- porting Japanese goods.
Mr. Potter objected to this, and His Lordship sald that he would note the objection.
A GENERAL PRACTICE Witness stated that it was general practise for advice notes to arrive with the goods. All advice notes were written by a man named Tam, in Kobe.
WRITTEN BEFOREHAND
In reply to the Chief Justice, witness explained that advice notes and invoices were prepared before hand and post-dated with dates of sailings from Kobe to Hongkong.
Counsel: Why must Tam. who is an important man in the business and who is busy travelling, to and from Kobe, write those notes which could be done by the clerk?-Be- cause he was acquainted with the Japanese regulations 507- erning restrictions in connec- tion with exports and remit- ting of money. Counsel: Were the letters also postdated?—Yes, Tam copied them from a draft:
"Do you seriously suggest that Tam copied out letters when in few days time he was going to Hongkong and could be able to let you know all the contents of the letter? Mr. D'Almada asked.
Witness made no direct reply but continued to explain that Tam copled the letters from drafts and
copled that same date on which the draft was written.
