DERBY DAY BROUGHT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DOWN TO THE RACE COURSE YESTERDAY, WHEN THE SECOND DAY OF THE ANNUAL RACE MEETING WAS HELD. The much-anticipated "battle of the season" for the Blue Riband of local racing failed to materialise, however, for Mr. Cire's Nayylight, ridden by Mr. H. C. Pih, though very well favoured, could get nowhere near Mr. Eu Tong-sen's Rose Elect, piloted by Mr. Charlie Encarnacao, which won in the record- breaking time of two minutes 55.2 seconds.

The record time also brought the lucky holder of ticket No. 404324 the record prize of $240,038.40 for the big sweep.

There was nothing very outstanding during the day. An early thrill occurred, when in the opening event, Mr. G. W. Sewell was thrown from his pony Geordle, and it was at first feared that he had been badly injured. Later, however, it was revealed that he had sustained a num- ber of bad bruises and shock. The best dividend of the day was $94.70, paid by Mr. Cire's Candlelight when it won the second event, the Perth Plate. Dividends as a whole, however, were very disappointing.
