The private bill,to amend the Lay of Libel

SUCCESS OF CUT IN HOMEWORK

Better Results In Examinations

The question of homework or no homework is revived by Mr. R. E. Knowles, headmaster of Winder- Grammar School, in mere Westmorland.

He has just reported on what he calls his

no "long term homework plan" and its effect on the school certificate examl- nation results. Under Mr. Knowles's system boys entering the school do no homework at all for the first three years, and afterwards only one hour per night.

"The examination results were better than they had been for 12 years," he says. "The number of boys' who this year obtained A and B credits with distinction WAJ double that of "revious years. Not only did more boys get through. but the percentage of marks was higher.

"We have now conducted cur experiment long enough to prove that the homework system prac- tised in many schools is vicious."

4.m.

Mr. Knowles said that the normal school hours were from 9 to 4.35 p. m., with breaks. totaliing

1 hour 50 min. a day.

"ONE HOUR ENOUGH The scheme was commended by Sir Cyril Norwood, formerly headmaster of Harrow School and now president of St. John's College. Oxford.

"I think Mr. Knowles has got a good plan." he said. "Certainly, one hour a night for homework is long enough for any boy up to the age of 15. In the past it has been customary to give boys work which would have taken them from 2 to three hours, which was far too long.

**Even to-day the general
