PARIS. Jan. 15 (Reuter)-A stir has been caused in France by pointed references to Italy's Suez Canal claims made by Edgar Bonnet, vice-president of the Suez Canal Company, at a meeting of the Board.

"There has been too much talk lately about reorganising the Com- pany." he declared. "The question was nothing less than wiping us out altogether to the exclusive ad- vantage of the Canal users. ...

"The Egyptian Government has opportunely acted by recalling that no change could be made in the status of the Canal without its consent."

M. Bonnet added: "The status of the Canal.cannot be altered with- out the consent of the. Company. and the Company is absolutely determined not to allow any attack on its rights or any change in the concession

The market opened 1/4 of a cent lower for all deliveries as compared with Friday's closing quotations.

During the session the market displayed a steadier undertone. There was some buying interest for trade and speculative accounts in evidence, but it was difficult to arrange business due to scarcity of sellers, and such business as was transacted, could only be done at a substantial premium. There were also fair enquiries for "Spot" Rubber by consuming centres noticeable.

It would appear that the lower price-level is attracting more general buying, which is not surprising in view of the steadily im- proving statistical position. "A policy of conservative accumulation would, therefore, seem to be "Indicated.

Towards the close of the session prices advanced by 1/4 cent on further good enquiries, the market closing with a steady undertone.

American consumption figures for December, 1937 amounted to 45,315 tons which is slightly higher than expected.
