FOREIGN
EXCHANGE
MARKET
Attitude Towards Sterling
LONDON, Jan. 9 (Reuter),- After fair activity early in the day during which the con- tinent acted both as buyer and seller the dollar and foreign exchange turned very quiet with business reduced to a minimum.
Explaining the abrupt falling-off In activity well-informed quarters point out that bears sterling ap-. parently are not going to be stam- peded. It probably realised thal the pre-week-end rally of sterling may "be overdone and many speculators prefer to wait and see whether the British authorities will hold the present sterling-dollar level in the face of genuine com- mercial demand for the latter.
Many are of the opinion that the continent's reni attitude towards sterling, in the light of the latest developments, is likely to be re- vealed towards the end of January when many long positions of the dollar dating back to last Septem- ber will mature.
