Steady conditions prevalled throughout the day. Good enquiries for "actuals" by consuming centres were in evidence, whilst specula-. tors and traders displayed fair buying interest in futures. The bet- ter sentiment was caused by the announcement of American can- sumption-figures of 46,048 tons for November which was well above expectations.

Later in the session prices advanced by 1/4 cent for all deliveries on further persistent general buying, but it was difficult to arrange business due to sellers holding of.

During the last trading hour, however, the market turned quieter, the higher price-level apparently attracting more sellers.

Closing tone was quiet, but steady.
