Goldsmith Tells Of Being
Trapped By Flames
The inquiry into the fire at 227, Shanghal Street, which is be- lieved to have started about midnight on November 16, was continued at the Kowloon Court yesterday before Mr. .Q. A. A. Macfadyen, assisted by a jury comprising Messrs. J. Hoare (Foreman), Lam Tit- hong and G. Guterres, when four more witnesses were heard. Three of these were shop fokis who lived on the ground floor, and the fourth was a coldsmith who occupied the rear cubicle on the second floor on the night of the fire.
The ground floor of 227, Shang- hat Street, houses a herb shop on the left side of the floor and an egg shop on the right side. Two herb shop fokis, Sun Ki and Mok Tal-kong gave evidence yesterday, as did Lel Kam, the egg shop foki. Their evidence was corroborative,, all claiming that they did. Dot smoke and that they did not either light Ares or use any lighting other than electric bulbs.
Sun KI, who occupied the cock- loft on the stairway leading up to the first floor, testified that when he was awakened he saw the stairs burning about seven or eight steps above the level of the cockloft. There was no fire at the cockloft level or below. Both the other fokis claimed that the fire spread down the stairs and not up.
Lel San, goldsmith, told of his being awakened to find himself trapped by the fre. He had climb- ed up to the roof where he saw two. other occupants of his floor already there. Lelo tested to, there having been a small kerosene lämp lighting up the second floor, which was suspended about 2 man's height above the trap door open- Ing on the stairs leading down."
