Chungking. November 23.

The Chinese press continues optimistic and satisfied with the progress of operations at Canton despite the fact that it is reported that the Japanese have received at Samshul 60,000 reinforcements indicating that the Japanese not only intend to hold Canton but also to extend their operations in South China.

In the north of the province of Hunan fighting is for the time being suspended as both parties are at present busily engaged in preparing their positions for forthcoming actions.

WATER METERS | FIGHT AGAINST

IN TENEMENTS

Requirements Of New Ordinance

There appears to be some mis- apprehension in regard to the re- the new Water- quirements of works Ordinance, which becomes effective on January 1.

Meny consumers seem to have the impression that in tenement houses separate meters must be applied for in respect of each floor, and cases have come to the Lotice of Government in which informed landlords have tenants.

This is incorrect, although as a rule the Water Authority will not refuse to grant applications for parate floor metara provided stocks are available...

Tenants. therefore, have the option of applying for separate floor meters, or arranging amongst themselves to retain the existing *meter supplying, the whole house and so avoiding the cost of alter- ing the internal service and pay- ing rent for three or four meters instead of one.
