IN-CHIEF RECALLED

South China Plans Not Meeting With The Desired Result

Tokyo, November '18. Lieutenant-General Rikicht Ando has been appointed Comman- der-in-Chief of the Japanese Expeditionary Force In South China to succeed Lieut.-General Moloo Furusho, it is announced officially here. Reuter.

The recall of General Furashs from the post of Commander-in- Chief of the Japanese forces in South China" has aroused con- siderable interest in Shanghai and is generally taken as an indica- tion that the Japanese plans in South China have not met with the desired result, says Transocean. This is confirmed by reports from Chinese, as well as neutral sources, "that the Japanese have been unable to make headway since the capture of Canton and that the Chinese forces are preparing for a counter-attack.

GERMAN ENVOY RECALLED FROM UNITED STATES

Berlin, Nov. 18.

A German news agency an- nounces that the German Äm- bassador in Washington, Horr Dieckoff, has been recalled to Berlin to make a report. Ho will give the German Foreign Minister, Herr Von Ribbentrop, full detalls about public opinion in, the United States and the" "strange altitude towards hap- penings in Germany expressed in speeches by President Roose- velt and other authoritative personalities."---Reuter.

Chinese reports that Chinese forces are actually in the close vicinity of Cantor seem, however, (t) be, prèmature as investigations made by foreign observers near Canton have failed to show "aigns of the Chinese offensive. Japan- ese troops have, however, made no. progress beyond Sameh, about 50 kilometres west of Canton, as well as Tungtah, 40 kilometres north of Canton, both of which were captured some time ago.

The Chinese actually claim to have recaptured both places bat: these reports are ac far uncon- firmed.-Transoceani.
