KING'S SPEECH

Historic Character Of U.S. Visit

LIBERAL ACCUSATION

London, November 9.

Reference to the historic character of the visit to the United States next year of the King and Queen was made by the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, speaking in the House of Commons debate on the King's Speech yesterday.

"The visit of the King and Queen to Canada next summer will be a truly historical occasion, because never before has any Dominion been privileged to welcome on its own soll the reigning Sovereign in person," said the Fremier. "The visit will afford a notable illustra- tion of the special part Their Majesties take in the life of the British Commonwealth.

"Therr Majesiles, who a few "months ago succeeded in win- ning for themselves a perman- ent place in the affections of the French people, will know when they cross the frontier that they carry with them a warm message of goodwill from the people of these islands to the Great Republië in the New World, said Mr. Chamberlain.

NO CONSTRUCTIVE PLAN

The Opposition Leader Mr. R. Attlee, criticised the Kinr's Speech as giving no' in- dication of a really construc- tive programme and expressed regret in particular at the ab- sence of any reference to the trade agreement with the United States. He also thought it characteristic of the compla- cency of the Government that there was no mention, of an- employment. The Opposition, he said, felt the foundation of national strength was the con- dition of the people and a sound policy of 'nutrition was the basis of that condition.
