FIVE WEEKS' WAGES FOR DRINKS

Workers Who

also drinkers may have to work more than five weeks a year to pay for their refreshment. This fact was brought forward

at the Temperance Summer School in Birmingham when Mr. George B. Wilson, for 28 years compiler of Great Britain's "drink bill," spoke of the statistics of liquor.

Mr. Wilson said that the 1937 drink bill of Great Britain showed a total expenditure of £250,387,000. This figure exceeded, he declared, the total amount to the nation La income tax, was greater than the. estimated value of the country's agricultural produce, and easily. outstripped the total expenditure on coal.

He pointed out that the working man who drinks two pints of beer a day pays a voluntary "Income tar" of £6. With a wage of £3 a week" he worked 5 weeks to pay for his drinks.
