IT HAS LONG SINCE been an acknowledged fact that, as a race, the Japanese are not what they have always claimed to be-civilized but the longer the hostilities are permitted to drag on, the more we are convinced of this. They are deceitful because they always say one thing and then do another: obstinate because, even now. after fourteen months of futile efforts, they still think they can "beat China to her knees"; stupid because they cannot see that they are being led like a flock of sheep by the military elements, and barbarous because they specialise in attacking defenceless cities and towns and murdering en masse innocent civilians particularly women and chi- dren
