MOSQUITO DAY
IN LONDON
Famous Scientists Honoured
Many doctors have been. knighted but few for such outstanding achievements two were honoured in London recently. The occasion was Mosquito Day. observed at the London School of Hygiene and "Tropical Medicine. The men were Sir Ronald Ross and Sir Patrick Manson.
A distinguished group of doctors and scientific men gathered to pay tribute to these ploneers in the control of malaria, a scourge still far too prevalent in the tropics.
It was contended at the meet- ing that Ross and Manson had revolutionlsed life in the warm parts of the Empire.
Ross discovered the relation between the mosquito and

in the transmission of malaria. Hr suggested the now obvious. but then revolutionary, theory that if all mosquitoes were des troyed, malaria would ccase. Ever since, varicus attempts have! been made to rid special sec. tions of mosquitoes, but such a campaign is almost hopeless and malaria is still a scourge.

Sir Ronald soon realised. ris discovery was epoch-taking buy that it did not mean the end of malaria, He, knew also, that upart from all anti-mosquito` werk, malaria cou'd be prevented by a daily dose of six grains quimine, as recommended" at presenz. by the malaria. Com- mission of the League of Nations Ever since these preventive doses have been taken by millions of perple in the tropics. And those that fall to take them, are ulti mately cured by a dose of, 15 to 20 grains of quinine continued for
