Ellen Terry's Letters

When some letters and sign- ed photographs of Ellen Terry were auctioned at Glendining's for a mere £3 12s. 6d. (they were bought by her daughter, Edith Craig), at least two par- sons there were shocked and saddened by the apparent

transience of even that great

actrem fame...

"One of these was Mrs. Carter. who had been Ellen Terry's cook during the last years at Tenterden and who had bought a small. battered doll given to her daughter by her late employer.

The other was Mr. Sidney Price," the son of "Cindy" Helen Price, to whom the auctioned letters had been written. His mother had known Ellen Terry for most of her acting life.

These letters to her friend "Cindy" were in the actress' mort affectionate terms and most

illegible handwriting.

"Don't be weariful," she writes

in one letter. "I have been for } years. and it's the worst illness of all. In another letter she wittes. "If I wrote a letter to myself I should go mad trying to read it."
