4)

The more reassuring action of New York did not appear to have any influence upon the Singapore market which, at the moment, con- Linues to be entirely dominated by political events.

Further disquieting reports on the European political situation had a demoralising effect upon the market. Forced sales for specula- tive accounts caused prices to sharply decline by 1 cents for all de- liveries, but even at the lower price-level it was very difficult to find buyers.

After some business having been transacted at as low as 2 cents for January-March and at correspondingly higher rates for more dis- tant deliveries, the market closed with a quiet undertone.

After ruling weak, the market rallied on unconfirmed rumours of favourable developments in the political situation.

NEW YORK COTTON

Lower cables from abroad caused an early decline and this was followed by liquidation by nervous holders, which, however, was off set by Trade and foreign buying. NEW YORK RUBBER

The market reflected the early weakness of the foreign markets and the prevailing nervousness regarding the foreign situation. Early selling was partly absorbed by dealer and commission house buying. but prices finally weakened towards the close on the unfavourable impression of the European dispute as given in Mr. Chamberlain's broadcast address:"

A year ago the interim of three per cent, was followed by a final of 51 per cent., and although it is too early to anticipate what the total distribution for 1938 will be. it is encouraging that at this stage the board has found no reason to in- dicate any serious falling off in earnings.
