HONG KONG, SEPTEMBER 19, 1933.

We appreciate the fact that Dr. Wu, as a member of the Red Cross Society is mainly interested in the work of succouring the maimed and wounded but is nonetheless significant that Dr. Wu should have made the announcement he did in so definite a tone. Can it be that he has received intimation that the Chinese are now ready for the biggest battle of defence since the beginning of the hostilities?

11

NEWS OF THE Sino-Japanese war has been overshadowed somewhat by the cables that keep pouring in about an even more serious situation in Europe, a situation which, if not carefully handled, may throw the world into another war, but we have nevertheless main- tained the closest contact with the developments in China and while the Japanese continue to try and bluff their way out the Chinese have, in characteristically calm and unassuming manner, been steadily improving their defences and reinforcing their troops on all fronts. It will not come as a surprise, therefore, if China should make one big effort to expel the invading forces in the near future...

But to return to the medical part of the war. Volunteer doctors and nurses from all parts of the world who have joined the Chinese Red Cross Society workers in the front leave but little room for doubt exactly where the world's sympathy lies. It is not so much ahti-Japanism that prompts these workers to throw in their lot with China. It is rather the horror and disgust at the methods employed by the Japanese fighting forces that compel every right thinking man, woman and child to feel deeply with the Chinese in their greatest hour of trial.

As Dr. Atal; leader of the Indian Medical Mission said. the whole of India stands behind the Chinese in their effort to drive out the oppressors. Dr. Atal is chiedy concerned with the humanitarian work of easing pain and suffering wherever he can but, as a far- adding that it is only through economic pressure that Japan cari be made to see the extreme folly of her ways ・・
