WITH THE CHINESE FORCES AT TEHAN, SEPTEMBER 8. As the Chinese defenders gradually consolidate their positions below Mahwelling on the Nanchang-Kinklang rallway, gunfire which was audible on the outskirts of Tehan has now become less frequent and more indistinct, attesting to the success of the Chinese forces in pushing back the invaders.

Teban, after a whole week's continuous air bombardment, is an appalling heap of wreckage and debris with scarcely a whole row of houses standing.

League Asked To Take Immediate Steps Against Japanese Aggression

On the eve of the session of the League Council tomorrow, the entire Chinese newspapers, repte - senting more than 100 papers throughout the country, has issued a powerful manifesto urging the in- ternational peace organ to take immediate and effective steps agalast Japanese aggression. -

The manifesto reiterated the unswerving faith of the Chinese people in the League but pointed out that despite the high hopes placed in it during the seven years since the outbreak of the Mukden "la- cident" in 1931,' the League has done nothing, apart from moral smpathy, effectively to assist the Chinese cause.
