Hardcourt Championships Open With Three Games
S.A.
GRAY PLAYS FINE GAME. TO BEAT MAJOR L.A. NEWNHAM
(By F. Mela) '..
The Hardcourt Tennis Championships, ran under the auspices of the United Services Recreation Club, opened yesterday" with three "matches despite the main that fell in the early afternoon and as the form shown by the players concerned was very encouraging a highly successful tournament is promised..
The courts were in very fine condition and so far from making the surface slippery the rain served to "bind" it to give the players a good foothold. The light, however, was very poor bit as all the inatches were finished before it got really bad this did not matter a great deal.
JUNIOR PLAYERS WIN,
S. A. Gray of the Kowloon celve much support from his part- Cricket Club, played one of his best ner who appeared to be over-awed games on a hard court to beat by the occasion. Major LA. Newnham by scores of 6-4, 6-2 Gray was a little slow in settling down but once he found his length he was deadly. his placing in particular being cellent.
2x-
Major Newnham, playing against a much younger man, was called upon to do a lot of running and that, to my mind. was what troubled him most. It must be said, however, that he brought off some very good shots especially in the early part of the game,
FINCHER AND REMEDIUS
E. C. Fincher and A. V. Remedios, playing together for the first time in an open tournament. surprised the critics by scoring an easy wint at the expense of Paul Kong and Tennie Kwok, the scores being 6-2, 6-1.
L Arafuroff and J.. Pengelly, the Civil Service Cricket Club "B" Division players, did well to beat R. C. S. Aflin and J. R. R. Jenkhi by 64 bao thẻ: winners combined very well to- gether and that. more than anything else, gave them" a well-deserved win.

O'Reilly Responsible For Innings Win
London, August 19.
The Australians best the Army on the Officers' Club ground at Aldershot yesterday by an innings and 67 runs The Australians took their score to 299, and the Army. In reply, could do no better than scrape together 119.
O'Reilly took sever, for 33 in the Army's second tanings, and good Agures though these are, he would be the first to admit that he was helped to a large extent by wofully inept batting.
The Australian innings cause to an end. when an acrobatic catch by Stephenson inished off C. W. Walker. They were thus left with a lead of 186..
POSSESSED OF DEVILS
The Army had time for one over before luncheon, and off this Captain T. Grore took six runs from E. L. Harbottle was one of the few Army bats- men who could deal with O'Reilly and Fleetwood-Smith. and with a nice cut off the latter he put us the 50 in three- quarters of an hour.
But then O'Reilly really got to work. First Harbottle was caught at the wicket and then Hamilton, playing forward, wis leg-before-wicket for the second time in the match. Two farther wicketi fell at 64, Cap- tain R. E. H. Hudson being leg- before to Fleetwood-Smith, who then bawled Knapp with a
