RUBBER PROSPECTS QUIET UNLESS POLITICS INFLUENCE MARKET

London And Liverpool Stocks Increase

There has been nothing particularly starting in the way of statis-` tical news during the past week. Rubber stocks in Loudon and Liver- pool continue to increase; but this is in line with expectations, writes Scrap Collector in his weekly rubber report.

It may possibly be taken as a mildly Encouraging factor that the rate of Increase seems to be decelerating slightly, the increase during July totalling 3,000 tons against approximately 5,000 tons during Junë.

July shipments from Malaya amounted to a little under 1,000 tons. This total was 1.100 tons greater than that recorded in the previous month and over 5,000 tons in excess of the May figure,

The market had previously estimated July shipments at a slightly higher Üzüre and the fact that final shipments exceeded the permis- sible exportable amount by a fairly wide margin can be regarded as satisfactory,

It indicates that the anticipated decline in Colony and or N.I. stocks is taking place which Improves the long term outlook...

However, despite the fact that July shipments were expected to

The S.C.A. have, in the couse of the last two weeks detained 15 children, 11 boys and four girls between the ages of. 2) and 8 years, who, it is alleged. were about to be taken to Sing- apore by Chinese women,

FALL IN ABSORPTION World absorption during June: despite the Increase of 1,700 tons in America, fell about 500 tons short of the previous month.

This slight decline was thus due to a drop at 2,200 tons in absorp- tion by the rest of the world. The quantity absorbed by the rest of the world amounted to appro- ximately 42,500 tons, which was 8,500 less than the figure for June last year.

This decline is definitely dis- couraging and, unless the trend is reversed during the current quar- ter the realisation of the anticipat- ed increase in American absorption will not cause as heavy a reduction in world stocks as is hoped at the moment.

As far as general Industrial news 15 concerned the usual, weekly Statistics car loadings, steel" mul activity, retall sales, etc., are main- ly favourable and indicative of In- creased activity.

They are still somewhat patchy. however, and there seems to be no sign, as yet, of any improvement in the employment figure either in America of the United Kingdom.

Any substantial increase in pro- duction must surely be accompani- ed by an increase in employment.

It is interesting to compare pre- sent market sentiment with the hopes and fears prevalent about four months ago.

PRICES CLIMB

By the middle of April prices held climbed appreciably from the depths touched at the end of March. Interest Was mainly centred on America as usual al- though the probable future action of the LR.R.C.. in view of the disastrous results of its "no an- nouncement" March meeting, was causing considerable speculation.

An increase in American absorp- tion during the second quarter of the year due to the anticipated tyre replacement demand during the Spring and Summer months was fairly confidentally expected.

The fact that March absorption had increased by réárly 7,000 tons, compared with the previous month; seemed to indicate that this hope was justified,

However, the market was doomed to disappointment and it was not unt June that the March absorp- tion figure was exceeded and then only by a paltry 200 tons.

A total of 51 cents was gained on the Singapore market in this sharp spurt which reached its peak on April
