JAPANESE RETREAT FROM

CHINCHENG

Loyang, August 2 Reduced to exhaustion by the lack of food and continuous Aghting, large numbers of Japanese re- treated from Chincheng in south Shanal on the border of Honan just before the town was captured by Chinese troops yesterday.

Chinese forces, after the capture of Heinyang, in north Hunan followed up the advance by attack- ing and subsequently occupying Chincheng. Over 500 Japanese were killed when they made a last effort to defend the town..

During the siege, Japanese planes threw down foodstuffs and medicine, to their troops, and some of the parcels were dropped on the Chinese lines. The defeated Japanese have escaped to Po Al on the terminus of the Taoching Railway in Honan (International).
