"The Good Earth," film adaptation of the famous novel by Pearl"
S. Buck starring Paul Muni and Luise Rainer (in pleture above), re- turns to the King's Theatre today for a short season.
Sweeping in scope but penetrating and human, the story deals with the life and fortunes of Wang Lung, the Chinese farmer who later becomes a rich tountry gentleman. The film follows the novel faithfully, and every incident, from the marriage of Wang Lung and O-Lan, the slave girl, with which the book opens. to the death of O-Lan and the marriage of the younger Wang, is perfectly portray- ed. Every detail. Including even the conversation between the char- acters. is kept intact.

An appeal for State support to save India's great heritage of dan- cing was made by the distinguish- ed Indian danseuse, Menaka, at a reception given to her on her re- turn from Europe with her ballet after an extensive tour of the West.
Menaka, replying to speeches of welcome, contrasted the conditions. of dancing in Western countries with those in India, where, she said, the real classical dance was fast disappearing for lack of ap- preciation and patronage.
Only State support. "she said. could now
India's great heritage of classical dancing. The great masters of the dance who were still alive must be provided with adequate means of Hvelihood, and opportunities for training pupils.
save
That could only be achieved by founding State theatres and train- ing schools throughout India.
Menaka won three prizes at the International Dance, Competition at Berlin in 1836.
