IT WILL BE RECALLED THAT THORNTON was arrested outside the Morris Works at Cowley during the night of May 24. He was met as he arrived at the factory by the poilce who were there by arrangement, Thornton was charged before a Special Court at the Oxford Police Station and was remanded.
At today's hearing, Mr. J. H. Parham appeared on behalf of the Director of Publie Prosecutions. "THIS CASE IS OF A BATHER. UNUSUAL CHARACTER, involving a plot to kidnap Lord Nufßeld and hold him for ransom," sală. Counsel in opening the case. "A scheme of this sort obviously" could not be carried out single-handed and the accused sought the assistance of a Major Ramsden to carry" Il "out."
Mr. Parham explained that the accused and Major Ramsden mo- tored round England and in the course of these trips Thornton ex- plained a scheme whereby Lord Nuffield would be compelled to write three letters, one to his sec- retary explaining his absence, one to the bank ordering a letter of credit in the name of Dr. Webb. and the third identifying Thorn- ton as Dr. Webb, which would be taken to the bank,
