Parls, June 3.

The fact that the British Ambas- sador, Sir Erie Phipps, who had already discussed current questions with the French Foreign Mlakster, M., Bonnet on Friday, again called on the latter the following day at noon has caused a stir in political. circter here.

Although nothing is known yet? regarding the discussions on Satur- day, it is assumed in well-informed cireles that the present develop- ments in the Czecho-Slovakian question and the projected protest to General Franco against the bombardment of open towns were the chief topics of the discussions.

Shanghai, June 5.

The new great Japanese offensive against Hankow which had been expected since the reorgani- sation of the Konoye Cabinet has at last been launched.

Operations were begun by the Japanese simultaneously on all sectors of the northern front, the total length of which is about 600 kilometres as the crow files.

Violent fighting took place on Saturday in the region of the Lunghal Railway, the engage- ments being particularly ferce at Lanfeng and Kalteng. Sixty kilometres further south anotber at- tack was launched by the Japanese against the Pelping-Hankow Rilway, and still further southward, in the region of Mengcheng and Pengpu, a third Japanese column is pushing forward in a westerly direction.

Most of the southern sector of the enormous front where the fighting is now in progress is formed by the Yangtze River,
