MINISTER AND NOT BY ANYBODY ELSE”

- MR. K.A. BUTLER

London, May 18.

THE SPANISH SITUATION and the recent negotiations begun at Röme between the Italian and French Governments were the subject of several questions asked in the House of Commons and an- swered by Mr. R. A. Butler, the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs. The answers in turn gave rise to lively interchange of supplementary questions.

MR. ARTHUR HENDERSON (Labour) asked, in view of Signor Mussolini's reference at Genoa to the Spanish war and the Franco-Italian negotiations, for an assurance that the British Government would support the French Government in resisting Ballan pressure to change the French polley to- wards the Spanish Government.

MR. BUTLER REPLIED: "Mr. Henderson may rest assured that the good offices of His Majesty's .. Government are always at the disposal of the French and Italian Governments should they destre them with a view to expediting a settlement of the Spanish sitnation.".

The Under-Secretary replied: The conversation between the Italian Ambassador and the Prime Minister was private and he is not prepared to answer questions as to its nature. The right honourable member must not assume that the Prime Minister gave an explana- tion of the words cited in his ques- tion(British Wireless).
