Franço's system of control. which demanded the steady drain ot sterling from London to Spain: made business profits impossible.
The Elo Tinto Company trades with America, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Great Britain. Peland, Italy and Germany. Her copper contracts with Great Britain, to whom, in 1935 and 1936, she supplied nearly 10,000 tons. were cancelled last year, however, and. requisitioned by Franco for Italy and Germany, in return for war materials.

The opportunity to trade by the "barter" system" has proved at beneficial to Italy and Germany as to Franco. In spite of Italy's efforts to be self-supporting,, she 1s largely dependent on foreign suppites for many essential min- erals. Her shortage of iron be came acute in the latter months of 1936. when naval orders and oll contracts made large demands" on the Iron and steel industry.
