DESPICABLE METHODS OF WAR
HONG KONG, MAY 1.
"The Japanese troops are going on from success to success, gain- ing fresh victories each day and the Chiang Kai-shek regime will soon be completely overthrown. The Chinese are beginning to see. the folly of resisting the Japanese invasion, knowing as they now do that it is prompted by nothing but sheer goodfellowship."
"The above is not our opinion. It represents the type of news that is being served up dally to the masses in Japan-served up to! them in the hope that It will have the effect of quietening the grow- ing unrest in that unhappy country."
*
But simple as they have been, the civilian population of Japan have at long last realised all that their wat lorda say must not be taken as the gospel truth, for did not these same war lords promise to wipe out the whole of China before Christmas 1937? Did they not promise those who helped to launch the campaign financially, a quick return for their "investments"? "And what have they proved to be but empty promises?
い
One does not necessarily have to be a genius to see through this, now tamillar game of Japanese bluff. Carried away by a false sense of their own strength, the muitarists of Japan at the out- set really thought they could do as they liked in China that they only had to send a handful of troops to North China and the people would be so completely demoralised that in a matter of weeks a new Japanese Empire would be set up.
They erred gravely and it did not take them long to find out their mistake. Instead. of "cutting losses" they preferred to go on with the war regardless of the cost to the country or how many in-. nocent peasants and labourers were sent to their death, for it was not long before the Japanese High Command had to draw on the civilian strength of the country.
Alded by superior. weapons, of war and also their navy as far as the ships could go up the Yangtze, the Japanese scored a few. successes. They finally reached Nanking but while they felt that this was the crowning point of the campaign, the Chinese, under the leadership of Generalissimo Chiang, knew otherwise. They were merely withdrawing strategically-to draw the invaders so far inland that they would find themselves in a hopeless plight.
And they have succeeded in this. as borne out by news of the war that is received in the Colony every day.
ነኔ
Now that the Japanese Navy is excluded from the major war operations, due to the fact that the ships cannot go so far up river, It has turned its hand to a more despicable job than bombing de- fenceless cities. It is giving its fall attention to the Chinese fishing junks-vessels that are, at most, a few tens of "feet in length and without any means of defence except for perhaps a single muzzle loading cannon-the type that was up-to-date about 100 years ago! What chance has a vessel of this type against an armed motor But the gallant boat let alone a modern Japanese destroyer? Japanese do not look at it in this light. They only want to ram and sink as many junks as possible, sending not only men and women but children, including newly-born babes in some cases, to a watery grave. "
We hear of "these outrages daily. As reports of the ruthless methods employed by the Japanese Navy and we take it that they must have the approval of the Admiralty in Tokyo-they confirm the world opinion that like the other two sections of their fighting It aims only to forces, the Japanese Navy has no scruples. destroy-and from the look of things it makes a specialty of seek- ing those who cannot strike back. Gallant people, these Japanese. Banzal!
