TO RISE
Trade of the Philippines with foreign countries in February, ac- cording to the bureau of customs, continued to rise, and, compared with the figures for the same month in 1937, showed an increase of P4,243,743, states the Manila Bulletin. While imports almost doubled, exports dropped by P9,- $875 000,000, bomparative figures for the same month in 1937 and 1938 showed.

During the month, the Philipines exported P18,000,435 worth of goods to the United States, and Imported $5.20 only P16,208,857 worth of merchan- dise from the mother country, the balance of trade thus remaining in favour of the Islands to the extent of P1,782,078. This was not the case, however, with trade carried on with Japan as the Islanda im- ported P2,618,940 worth of goods and exported only P103,457 worth jot merchandise to the neighbour- ing empire, resulting in a balance of trade amounting to P1,813,483 unfavourable to the Philippines.
