CHAIRMAN'S. SPEECH
Addressing the meeting Mr. Shields aald:-
Our turnover of Rope for the pear now under review shows an improvement over the figures for
1936 in spite of the keen-com- petition with which we have had to contend.
With regard to our properties, the Factory Buildings at Mataukok continue in occupation, and about 90 per cent, of the number of flats In our 28 Chinese Dwelling House at Kennedy Town is now occupied as compared with 40 per cent. this time last year. The increase is due to the influx of refugees from various parts of China owing to the Sino-Japanese. Hostilities.
YEAR'S PROFIT
Turning to the Accounts, Gentle- men, you will see that the profit earned for the year under review, after providing for Depreciation and allowing for Directors' and | Auditors' Pees and Commission to General Managers, etc.. "19 $58,209. 56. This amount added to the balance of $43.065.08 brought for- ward from 1936, makes a total at credit of Proft and Loss Account of $101.275.54. which your Directors recommend, be dealt with follows:-
Pay a dividend of 25 cerits

per share absorbing....$50,000.00 And Carry forward to credit of next year's ac- count Depreciation on Buildings, etc... has been provided on the usual basis except that your Directora decided to provide an additional 310.000 depréciation on Machinery as some of our machines are now getting old and will need replacing.
Revenue from renta shows an in- |crease of $8,186,92 over the figures recorded for 1938.
You will notice that Share In- vestments do not appear in the Accounts. These were sold during the past year at a proft of $5,358.60 as shown in the Profit and Loss Account..
You will also note the amount $3.823.50 expended on the Wharf. This represents the cost of repairs and replacements made during the year and I may say that the Wharf is now practically
1 new one.
SUNDRY DEBTORS
Sundry Debtors Accounts amounting to $58.112.87 are slight- ly higher than usual owing to in- creased sales made towards the end of the year. These are ordi- nary trade balances with custom- ers which have practically all been pald up.
*
The Cash Position has also im proved since the date of the ac counts and is adequate to meet the dividend requirements.
As regards the prospects for the current year, it is unfortunate that world conditions in general and the state of affairs in the Far East make any forecast dangerous, but
I may say, however, that we con- tinue to enjoy the support of many Shipping Companies and our sales
so far are encouraging.'

"Following the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese hostilitles, a gentlemen's
agreement was made
among
bankers the whereby the Chinese Govern- ment banks provided exchange only for legitimate purposes. This agreement has made trade possible despite difficul- ties. and confidence in the Chinese currency has been steadily maintained.
serves
"The recent puppet bank in North China is a Japanese effort to substitute notes, in- convertible into" free foreign exchange. for the national currency, and thus obtain re- by restricting the national currency, using such notes for their own purposes.
"The exchange measure has been adopted after careful 'consideration by the Chinese Government as the most prac- tical means to defend China's currency against this measure. The Chinese Government strongly desire to employ the best workable procedure, and has assured those concerned that modifications can be made in the light of experience. It is also desired to cause the least possible interference with the previous system, and with the position of Shanghai,
The measure expressly states that the Exchange will be con- solidated at existing levels, as It is intended to maintain Arm- ly the stability of the Chinese currency,"
H.M.S. BELFAST
LAUNCHED
NAMED BY MRS. CHAMBERLAIN
(BY AIR MAILƏ
HMS. Belfast, the 10,000-ton cruiser of the improved Southamp- ton class, which has been built by Harland and Wolff, Limited, was launched from, the firm's yard at Queen's Island on March 17 by Mrs. Neville Chamberlain, states Tile Times.
This is the Arst time that a ship of the Navy has been named Bel- fast. Referring to this fact at a luncheon after the naming cere- mony, the Lord Mayor of Belfast (Sk Crawford McCullagh; said that the city intended to mark the hon- our by presenting the new cruiser with a silver ship's bell and a set of dags.
Replying to the toast of “H.M.S. Belfast" proposed by Sir Craw- ford McCullagh, Vice-Admiral St A. B. Wake said that the idea of naming vessels of the new cruiser' class after the great cities of the Kingdom was to draw contributions to the personnel of the Navy from their vast populations and also to establish a special interest between each city, and a particular vessel of the Fleet.
On behalf of the builders of the the ship, Mr. F. E. Rebbeck, chair- rian of Messrs. Harland and Wolf, prosented to Mrs. Chamberlain a diamond bracelet as a memento of the launch of the Belfast...
Acknowledging this gift. Mrs Chamberlain said she was proud to feel that she had started H.M.S Belfast on her mission as part of the Brith Navy to maintain the peace of the world and to protect Britih lives and shipping.
