BRITISH SOLDIERS MAY TAKE "SUITABLE ACTION" IN THEIR OWN DEFENCE

If Threatened By Japanese Troops In Shanghai

WEAPON POINTED AT DURHAM'S COMMANDING OFFICER

Shanghai. March 29.

The British military authorities to-day delivered a strong protest to General Hata, commander-in-chief of the Japanese forces in Cen- Iral China. against the behaviour of the Japanese miUtary and police generally during the past few days.

In particular, the British authorities protested against two in- eldenis yesterday in one of which a Japanese officer, dressed in Chinese clothes, threatened Major Heslop, commanding ofleer of the Durham Light Infantry, pointing a revolver at Major Heslop's stomach when lorries were stopped outside the British defence sector yesterday.

In the other incident, Japanese military police threatened Britis officers and sentries with firearms when they twice tried and were prevented from entering the British defence sector,

The British soldiers have been informed that in future they may take suitable action" in their own defence in the event of being struck or threatened by Japanese troops or military police.

It is learned here today that a group of Afteen lorries flying the new Ave-barred flag tried to enter the British defence sector yesterday afternoon from Japanese occupied territory. The lorries were stapped and the flags removed before they were allowed to proceed in order to avoid possible incidents.-(Reuter).

Manila Keeps Close Watch

Is there a secret to the grey painted, smart-looking "fisting smack, flying the emblem of the Rising Sun, which makes periodical calls to Hong Kong harbour? I so, what is the secret?

As mysteriously as she enters she seems to depart; where, no- body seems to know.

Are the naval authorities keep- ing an Je on this craft? Has an aeroplane ever followed her for any distance out of the Hong Kong harbour?

These so-called fishing smacks are to be found in Russian waters, in the China Sea as far as Austra lia, in the Philippines, in Malay- sla and even in North American

An American officer who went board to tell the Japaness captain that he could not remain there, discovered that the "broken fishing smack" was practically new and totally devoid of any fish odour.

The craft then crawled out of the bay, but a navy plane sent out loter to observe its movements found that it was actually rushing towards Japan at a good 20 knots.

MINE DANGER

A council of U.S. officers, study- ing the puzzle, suddenly realised that such smacks contacting a vessel located in far off watera could bring back enough mines to bottle up the entire American Flect in Manila Harbour.
